History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is the hedgehog washerwoman of Beatrix Potter's tales, and her 50p was one of five the Royal Mint issued in 2016 for the 150th anniversary of Potter's birth. The set opened with a coin for the author and continued with Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin. The Royal Mint describes this as the fourth release in the series.

Her design was fixed by a proclamation made on 15 March 2016, which also covered Jemima Puddle-Duck and Squirrel Nutkin. The Royal Mint's figures give 8,800,000 struck for circulation. That is the second highest of the 2016 coins, behind Peter Rabbit at 9,700,000, and well ahead of Squirrel Nutkin (5,000,000) and Jemima Puddle-Duck (2,100,000).

Across the thirteen circulating Beatrix Potter 50p coins dated 2016 to 2018, seven have lower mintages in the Royal Mint's figures and five have higher. It is one of the easier coins of the series to find.

Emma Noble, a Royal Mint engraver, designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a portrait of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle with the inscription MRS. TIGGY-WINKLE. The Royal Mint describes a conscientious hedgehog dressed in her washerwoman's attire, shown in her dress and petticoat at the centre of the coin.

The Mint adds that Potter drew the character from two sources: her own pet hedgehog, and Kitty MacDonald, a Scottish washerwoman.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2016. The value and the date are both on the obverse. The edge is plain.
