History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Jemima Puddle-Duck. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
In 2016 the Royal Mint issued a set of 50p coins for the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter. There were five: a portrait coin for the author and four of her characters, Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin. Jemima was the third coin in the series. The proclamation covering her design, along with Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin, was made on 15 March 2016.
The Royal Mint's figures give 2,100,000 Jemima Puddle-Duck coins struck for circulation. That is the lowest of the 2016 set by a wide margin. Squirrel Nutkin had 5,000,000, the portrait coin 6,900,000, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle 8,800,000 and Peter Rabbit 9,700,000.
It is not the lowest of the whole Beatrix Potter series, although it is often described that way. The 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny coins had 1,400,000 each, and the 2018 Mrs Tittlemouse 1,700,000.
Emma Noble designed the reverse, as she did for all five of the 2016 coins. The proclamation describes it as a portrait of Jemima Puddle-Duck with the inscription JEMIMA PUDDLE-DUCK. She stands at the centre of the coin, and the Royal Mint says the design faithfully captures the character's gentle and recognisable appearance from Potter's original illustrations.
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, showing her in the George IV State Diadem. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2016, so both the value and the date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.
