History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Mr. Jeremy Fisher. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Mr. Jeremy Fisher is the lead character of Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, which the Royal Mint notes was first published in 1906. His 50p was issued in 2017, in the Mint's second group of Beatrix Potter coins.
The first group, in 2016, marked the 150th anniversary of Potter's birth. Four more followed in 2017: a new Peter Rabbit, Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Tom Kitten and Benjamin Bunny. One proclamation, made on 15 February 2017, covers all four and describes them as commemorating her life and work.
The Royal Mint's figures give 9,900,000 struck for circulation. That is a large figure for the series, but only the third of the four 2017 coins, well behind Benjamin Bunny at 25,000,000 and Peter Rabbit at 19,900,000 and a little ahead of Tom Kitten at 9,500,000. Among all thirteen circulating Beatrix Potter 50p coins dated 2016 to 2018 it is the third highest. It is also slightly ahead of the first Peter Rabbit coin of 2016, at 9,700,000.
Emma Noble designed the reverse. The proclamation describes a portrait of Mr Jeremy Fisher with the inscription MR JEREMY FISHER. The Royal Mint describes him in his waterproof mackintosh, and says the design captures his adventurous spirit.
The obverse carries the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2017. The value and date are on the obverse, as on every coin in the series. The edge is plain.
