History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III End of World War II. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

This is the Royal Mint's 50p for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, 8 May 1945, when the Second World War ended in Europe. The Mint's own title for it is The 80th Anniversary of VE Day, and it is dated 2025. It is one of two 50p coins the Mint issued that year for the anniversary of the war's end; the other, Stories of the Second World War, shows three military medals.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures record one 50p for 2025, the Atlantic Salmon definitive, and the VE Day coin was sold as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin and in silver and gold. No mintage has been published for the base metal version.

The reverse is by John Mills and it is not new. The Mint describes it as a remastered version of his dove of peace, the design he made for the 1995 £2 marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the war. The Mint's design list describes that coin as a stylised dove, the symbol of peace, with the words IN PEACE GOODWILL on its edge between the dates 1945 and 1995.

For the 50p the words have moved onto the face of the coin. The proclamation describes a peace dove accompanied by the inscriptions IN PEACE GOODWILL and VE DAY 8 MAY 1945. The Mint attributes the phrase to Winston Churchill.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.
