History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Entente Cordiale. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Entente Cordiale was a series of agreements between the United Kingdom and France signed on 8 April 1904, which brought a marked improvement in relations between the two countries. For the centenary a royal proclamation, given at Buckingham Palace on 11 February 2004, ordered £5 coins in gold, platinum, silver and cupro-nickel.

It was the only crown design of 2004. The Royal Mint's striking numbers give 1,205,594 crowns struck to circulating standard that year. Among the £5 years in the Mint's table up to that point only 2001 is lower, at 851,491. Figures fell much further afterwards: 52,267 in 2006 and 30,561 in 2007.

The subject stands out in the Royal Mint's list of crown designs. Most crowns before it mark royal birthdays, weddings, jubilees and memorials, while this one commemorates a diplomatic agreement.

David Gentleman designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as the combined figures of Britannia and Marianne, with the words ENTENTE CORDIALE and the dates 1904 and 2004. The pairing has a precedent: a French postcard of 1904 showed Britannia and Marianne dancing together to mark the original agreement.

The obverse carries the portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D and the denomination FIVE POUNDS. The edge is milled: the proclamation calls for a graining upon the edge, with no inscription.
