History and design
The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on 21 October 1805 off Cape Trafalgar, on the south-west coast of Spain, between the Royal Navy and a combined French and Spanish fleet. The British fleet under Nelson won, and Nelson was killed. Two hundred years later the Royal Mint issued two £5 crowns: this one for the battle and a second, by James Butler, for the admiral.
Both were authorised by a single royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 17 November 2004, which ordered coins in gold, silver and cupro-nickel. The Royal Mint's striking numbers do not separate them: 1,075,516 crowns were struck to circulating standard in 2005, the two designs together. That is a little below the 1,205,594 of the single 2004 crown.
Clive Duncan designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of the two British ships, HMS Victory and Temeraire, in the midst of the battle, the central design surrounded by the inscription TRAFALGAR and the dates 1805 and 2005. On the cupro-nickel coin the edge is milled. The proclamation reserves the lettered edge for the silver and gold coins, which have a plain edge with Nelson's signal, ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY, in incuse letters.
Collecting notes
A battle scene of two ships is a more detailed subject than the portrait on the companion coin, so look closely at the central design for scuffs and at the rim for knocks. Coins struck to circulating standard usually carry some bag marks.
The Royal Mint's 2005 sales page records 79,868 orders for the Trafalgar coin in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack, against 72,498 for the Nelson pack. The silver proof drew 21,448 orders against a limit of 30,000, and the gold proof is shown as sold out at its limit of 1,805. The page also gives a single line for a Trafalgar and Nelson silver piedfort: 2,818 orders against a limit of 3,000.
Crowns are legal tender, but the Royal Mint describes them as "intended as souvenirs rather than for everyday use" and says banks are not required to accept them. A base-metal coin without edge lettering is the normal issue, not an error.
The companion coin is the Nelson crown.
