Common questions
How much is the 2004 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Entente Cordiale worth?
Verified sold prices for the 2004 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Entente Cordiale run from £5.45 to £21.50 across 5 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
How many 2004 Entente Cordiale £5 coins were made?
The Royal Mint's striking numbers give 1,205,594 crowns struck to circulating standard in 2004, the only crown design of that year. Its 2004 sales page separately lists 16,507 Brilliant Uncirculated packs and 6,065 base-metal proof coins ordered by collectors.
Who designed the Entente Cordiale crown?
David Gentleman designed the reverse, which the royal proclamation describes as the combined figures of Britannia and Marianne with the words ENTENTE CORDIALE and the dates 1904 and 2004. The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Elizabeth II.
What does the Entente Cordiale £5 coin commemorate?
It marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the Entente Cordiale between Great Britain and France, the series of agreements signed on 8 April 1904. The design joins the national figures of the two countries, Britannia and Marianne, in a single image.
Is the 2004 Entente Cordiale crown rare?
No. At 1,205,594 it was struck in large numbers. In the Royal Mint's table of £5 crowns struck to circulating standard up to 2004, only the 2001 figure of 851,491 is lower, but later years fall far below both.
Is the Entente Cordiale £5 coin legal tender?
Yes. The proclamation makes the cupro-nickel coin legal tender for payment of any amount in the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint notes that crowns are souvenirs, that banks are not required to accept them, and that it is best to check with a bank first.
How do I identify the 2004 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Entente Cordiale?
Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Entente Cordiale was a series of agreements between the United Kingdom and France signed on 8 April 1904, which brought a marked improvement in relations between the two countries. For the centenary a royal proclamation, given at Buckingham Palace on 11 February 2004, ordered £5 coins in gold, platinum, silver and cupro-nickel.
It was the only crown design of 2004. The Royal Mint's striking numbers give 1,205,594 crowns struck to circulating standard that year. Among the £5 years in the Mint's table up to that point only 2001 is lower, at 851,491. Figures fell much further afterwards: 52,267 in 2006 and 30,561 in 2007.
The subject stands out in the Royal Mint's list of crown designs. Most crowns before it mark royal birthdays, weddings, jubilees and memorials, while this one commemorates a diplomatic agreement.
David Gentleman designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as the combined figures of Britannia and Marianne, with the words ENTENTE CORDIALE and the dates 1904 and 2004. The pairing has a precedent: a French postcard of 1904 showed Britannia and Marianne dancing together to mark the original agreement.
The obverse carries the portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D and the denomination FIVE POUNDS. The edge is milled: the proclamation calls for a graining upon the edge, with no inscription.
Collecting notes
Crowns are commemoratives. The Royal Mint says they are "intended as souvenirs rather than for everyday use, and are therefore rarely found in circulation", and that although they are legal tender "banks are not required to accept them".
Most examples are loose coins struck to circulating standard, so expect bag marks. Check the two faces and the flat fields beside them, where contact marks show first. The Royal Mint's 2004 sales page also records 16,507 orders for the coin in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack and 6,065 for a base-metal proof, which had an issue limit of 50,000.
The precious-metal versions share the design. The same sales page lists 11,295 silver proofs ordered against a limit of 15,000 and 926 gold proofs against a limit of 1,500. The silver piedfort (limit 2,500) and the platinum proof (limit 501) are both shown as sold out.
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
