History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Royal Wedding. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Prince William married Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011. The Royal Mint struck the official United Kingdom coin for the occasion, a £5 crown authorised by a royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 16 March 2011.
The announcement described the design as approved by the Royal Household and the Government. Kevin Clancy, Director of the Royal Mint Museum, called it "a coin for the people who want to commemorate the Royal Wedding with their own piece of history".
The Royal Mint's 2011 sales page lists 250,000 base-metal coins sold and marks the line Sold Out. No crown on the Mint's 2009, 2010 or 2011 sales pages sold more. It is still a small issue beside the last royal wedding crown: 26,773,600 of the 1981 Charles and Diana coin were struck.
Mark Richards, a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, was chosen through an invitation-only tender process involving a handful of British sculptors, and his submission was selected by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee. The proclamation describes facing portraits of the couple with the inscription WILLIAM AND CATHERINE above and the date 29 APRIL 2011 below. The announcement pointed to the informal use of the couple's first names.
Richards said he "was inspired by what I think is best summed up as the spirit of 'friendship in love'", and that the challenge was "faithfully rendering their expressions in such a small space".
The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Elizabeth II with her titles, FIVE POUNDS and the year 2011. The cupro-nickel coin has a milled edge.
