History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was born in 1900, and the Royal Mint marked 125 years since her birth with the £5 crown of its 2025 Annual Set. The design was revealed on 27 December 2024 and the sets went on sale on 2 January 2025.

Born Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, she married the Duke of York at Westminster Abbey on 26 April 1923 and became queen in 1936 when her husband took the throne as George VI after his brother's abdication. The Mint's account dwells on her wartime role touring Britain to raise morale, and on her support for her daughter Elizabeth II after the King's death in 1952.

She is one of the most commemorated figures on the crown: the Mint struck coins for her 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays and a memorial crown in 2002. This is the first to carry the portrait of Charles III. It was sold only in the Annual Sets, and no struck or sold figure has been published.

The reverse looks back to the first of those coins. Its portrait of the Queen Mother is by Richard Guyatt and formed part of his design for the 1980 crown for her 80th birthday. The Royal Mint's specification credits the 2025 reverse to Dan Thorne.

The proclamation describes a depiction of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, the garter star and her cypher, surrounded by a Scottish thistle and an English rose, with the inscription QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER. The rose and thistle also flanked her cypher on the 1990 crown for her 90th birthday.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2025. The Mint lists the edge of the Brilliant Uncirculated coin as milled.
