Common questions

How much is the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III John Lennon worth?

No verified sale of the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III John Lennon has been logged on MyCoinage yet.

How many John Lennon £5 coins were made?

The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure for the 2025 John Lennon £5. Its product page gives a maximum coin mintage of 10,010 for the colour-printed Brilliant Uncirculated version, which is an issue limit, and states no limit for the plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin.

Who designed the John Lennon £5 coin?

Henry Gray designed the reverse, working from a side profile photograph of Lennon taken by the music photographer Bob Gruen on the roof of Lennon's penthouse in New York City. The portrait of King Charles III on the obverse is by Martin Jennings.

Is the John Lennon £5 legal tender, and can I spend it?

It is legal tender, because the royal proclamation that authorised it says so. The Royal Mint describes £5 crowns as souvenirs rather than coins for everyday use, and says banks are not required to accept them, although some may allow them to be paid into an account.

Why does the John Lennon coin say IMAGINE?

The word appears to the right of the portrait as a reference to Lennon's single and album of that name. The Royal Mint describes Imagine as the title of his most famous politically charged song, and Lennon's name appears on the left of the design.

What is the difference between the two John Lennon £5 coins?

The design is the same. One is the plain cupro-nickel Brilliant Uncirculated coin. The other is colour-printed, was sold only by the Royal Mint and has a maximum coin mintage of 10,010. Both are dated 2025 and have the same weight and diameter.

How do I identify the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III John Lennon?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The John Lennon £5 was announced by the Royal Mint on 14 March 2025 and went on sale on 17 March. It belongs to the Mint's Music Legends series, and the Mint said Lennon followed the likes of Queen, David Bowie, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney in being honoured on his own UK coin. The Mint timed it for the year in which Lennon would have turned 85, and its range page adds that 2025 was the 50th anniversary of his final solo album. It was produced in partnership with Yoko Ono Lennon and Bag One Arts.

The Mint presented the coin as a tribute to Lennon both as an artist and as an advocate for peace, pointing to the 1969 bed-in protests in Amsterdam and Montreal that he staged with Yoko Ono.

Like every modern £5 crown this is a collector coin. The Royal Mint says crowns have not been struck to a circulating standard since 2008 and describes them as souvenirs rather than coins for everyday use. No struck or sold figure has been published for it.

The reverse is by Henry Gray. At its centre is a side profile portrait of Lennon based on a photograph by Bob Gruen, taken on the roof of Lennon's penthouse in New York City. Lennon's name is to the left of the portrait and the word IMAGINE to the right, a reference to his single and album. The royal proclamation describes it as a depiction of John Lennon accompanied by the inscriptions JOHN LENNON and IMAGINE.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2025. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

Two cupro-nickel versions were sold, both Brilliant Uncirculated and both 28.28g and 38.61mm. The plain coin has no stated limit. The colour-printed coin was sold only by the Royal Mint and has a maximum coin mintage of 10,010, which is an issue limit and not a count of coins sold. Check which version a listing is offering, and look for the Mint's pack, since a loose coin picks up handling marks quickly on a crown this size.

The same proclamation authorised precious-metal coins with this design in other denominations, from a gold 50p to a silver coin of 500 pounds face value, so a silver or gold Lennon coin is not simply this coin in another metal.

The crown is legal tender, but the Mint says banks are not required to accept crowns. Other Music Legends crowns include the 2024 Paul McCartney £5 and the 2025 Iron Maiden £5.
