History and design
The Paul McCartney £5 was launched by the Royal Mint on 6 December 2024 as part of its Music Legends series. The Mint says it is the first time McCartney has been honoured on a UK coin. The project began in 2021, when the Mint approached his team after a medallic collaboration with Royal Mail, and the coin was made with his company MPL Communications, with McCartney and his team involved throughout. The Mint says he approved the design.
Like other modern crowns it was sold to collectors rather than issued into change. The Royal Mint describes £5 crowns as "souvenirs rather than for everyday use" and has not struck any to a circulating standard since 2008. No striking or sales figure has been published for the plain coin, because the Mint's commemorative sales pages stop at coins dated 2023, and its product page gives no issue limit.
The reverse is by Deborah Osborne and Andrew Ross of the design agency Osborne Ross. At its centre is McCartney's signature, with "Paul" as he writes it and "McCartney" beneath in block capitals. Above is his left-handed Höfner violin bass, with the Wings logo on the headstock, and a piano keyboard runs across the base. The notes on the keys were chosen by McCartney himself.
The background is the psychedelic pattern of his Magic Piano, which Beatles fans will recognise. The royal proclamation describes the design as a guitar head and piano keys with Paul McCartney's signature and the inscription MCCARTNEY.
The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
Collecting notes
The Brilliant Uncirculated coin came in fold-out packaging recounting McCartney's career. A colour-printed version, which brings the Magic Piano pattern to life, had a maximum coin mintage of 10,010 and has its own entry, the colour McCartney £5. The 2oz silver proof is a larger 62.86g, 40mm coin with a maximum coin mintage of 756.
For the launch the Mint also made a one-off gold plectrum version of the coin as a gift to McCartney, recalling his early use of pennies as guitar picks. It was made from gold recovered from electronic waste at the Mint's South Wales site.
The coin is legal tender for any amount, but the Royal Mint notes that banks are not required to accept crowns. The raised signature and the outline of the bass are the first places to show handling marks. The George Michael £5 is an earlier 2024 coin in the same series.
