The 2001 Marconi £2 marks the centenary of the first wireless transmission across the Atlantic. The Royal Mint gives the date as 12 December 1901, when Guglielmo Marconi sent the Morse code letter S (three dots) from Poldhu in Cornwall to Signal Hill at St John's, Newfoundland, a feat that had been thought impossible.
The Royal Mint's figures record 4,558,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2001. That compares with 34,984,750 standard Technology £2 coins of the same date. Among the 35 commemorative £2 designs in the Mint's circulating figures, 20 have lower mintages and 14 have higher, so this is a mid-range issue and not a scarce one.
The reverse is by Robert Evans. Radio waves decorate the centre and the outer border, and a spark of electricity links the two zeros of the date 2001 to represent the generation of the signal. The Royal Mint adds that the design includes beams standing for the Morse letter S, and that the pattern of concentric waves symbolises Marconi's influence on communication.
The edge is milled and carries the inscription WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC and MARCONI 1901, the two phrases separated by groups of dots. The obverse has the fourth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin is bimetallic, with a nickel-brass outer ring and a cupro-nickel centre.
