Common questions
How much is the 2002 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Commonwealth Games - England worth?
Verified sold prices for the 2002 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Commonwealth Games - England run from £7.09 to £131 across 4 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
How do I tell which Commonwealth Games £2 I have?
Look at the small round flag behind the athlete. A plain cross is England. The same cross with a small crowned hand at its centre is Northern Ireland. A diagonal cross is Scotland and a dragon is Wales. On worn coins you will probably need a magnifier.
How many 2002 Commonwealth Games England £2 coins were made?
The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 650,500 for circulation. The other three were Northern Ireland 485,500, Wales 588,500 and Scotland 771,750, so England is the third lowest of the set. All four are among the six lowest circulating £2 mintages in the Mint's figures.
Is the England Commonwealth Games £2 rare?
It is scarce by £2 standards. Its 650,500 mintage is the fifth lowest of any circulating £2 in the Royal Mint's published figures, a small fraction of the 13,024,750 standard Technology £2 coins struck in the same year. Two of its sister coins, Northern Ireland and Wales, are scarcer still.
Who designed the 2002 Commonwealth Games £2?
Matthew Bonaccorsi designed the reverse, which shows a moving athlete holding a banner aloft. The same design was used for all four coins, with only the flag changed. The obverse portrait of Elizabeth II is by Ian Rank-Broadley.
What is written on the edge of the Commonwealth Games £2?
The milled edge carries the incuse inscription SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP MANCHESTER 2002, the same on all four coins. The wording is set out in the royal proclamation for the issue, which was given on 18 July 2001.
How do I identify the 2002 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Commonwealth Games - England?
Check the weight 12g and diameter 28.4mm and the metal (bimetallic: copper-nickel center in nickel brass ring) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The 2002 Commonwealth Games England £2 is one of four coins issued for the XVII Commonwealth Games, held in Manchester in 2002. The Royal Mint struck one for each home nation (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), all sharing a single design and differing only in a small flag. The issue was authorised by a royal proclamation given on 18 July 2001.
The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 650,500 England coins for circulation. The others were Northern Ireland 485,500, Wales 588,500 and Scotland 771,750. All four sit among the six lowest circulating £2 mintages in the Mint's published figures. In the same year the Mint struck 13,024,750 of the standard Technology £2 coin.
The reverse is by Matthew Bonaccorsi. It shows the stylised figure of an athlete in motion holding a banner aloft. The top of the banner is divided into lines that suggest the lanes of a running track or a swimming pool. In front of the figure are the inscription XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002 and the value, written as £2 and not in words. Behind the figure is a small circular cartouche containing the flag of one home nation, which on this coin is the St George's cross of England.
The edge is milled with the incuse inscription SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP MANCHESTER 2002. The obverse carries the fourth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF.
Varieties and errors
The four coins are separate issues, not varieties of one coin, but they are constantly mixed up. Everything depends on the flag in the cartouche, which is tiny and often the first detail to wear.
England has a plain cross of St George. Northern Ireland has the same cross with a small crowned hand at its centre (the Ulster Banner), and this is the pair most often confused. Scotland has the diagonal cross of the St Andrew saltire. Wales has a dragon, which is the easiest of the four to recognise.
No mint error specific to the England coin is documented.
Collecting notes
Identify the flag before anything else, with a magnifier on a worn coin. An England coin and a Northern Ireland coin differ only at the very centre of the cross, and Northern Ireland has the lowest mintage of the four, so the two are easily mistaken for one another. A flat or blurred centre is not enough to call a coin either way.
The coin was struck for general circulation. The Wales coin is the next scarcest after Northern Ireland.
The proclamation also provided for silver and gold versions of the design. The gold coin has a plain edge with the same lettering.
