Common questions

How much is the 2001 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Marconi Telegraph worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2001 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Marconi Telegraph run from £3.04 to £14.00 across 4 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

How many Marconi £2 coins were made?

The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 4,558,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2001. In the same year the Mint struck 34,984,750 of the standard Technology £2, so the Marconi coin makes up a little over a tenth of the £2 coins dated 2001.

Is the 2001 Marconi £2 rare?

No. Its 4,558,000 mintage is in the middle of the range for commemorative £2 coins: of the 35 commemorative designs in the Royal Mint's circulating figures, 20 have lower totals and 14 have higher. The scarcest £2 coins were struck in numbers below one million.

Who designed the Marconi £2?

Robert Evans designed the reverse. It shows radio waves spreading from the centre and around the border, with a spark of electricity joining the two zeros of the date 2001. The obverse portrait of Elizabeth II is by Ian Rank-Broadley.

What does the edge of the Marconi £2 say?

The edge reads WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC and MARCONI 1901, separated by groups of dots. The lettering may face either side of the coin. The Royal Mint says there is no right or wrong way up, so upside-down edge lettering is not an error.

What does the Marconi £2 commemorate?

It marks the centenary of Guglielmo Marconi's first wireless transmission across the Atlantic. The Royal Mint gives the date as 12 December 1901, when the Morse code letter S was sent from Poldhu in Cornwall to Signal Hill at St John's, Newfoundland.

How do I identify the 2001 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Marconi Telegraph?

Check the weight 12g and diameter 28.4mm and the metal (bimetallic: copper-nickel center in nickel brass ring) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The 2001 Marconi £2 marks the centenary of the first wireless transmission across the Atlantic. The Royal Mint gives the date as 12 December 1901, when Guglielmo Marconi sent the Morse code letter S (three dots) from Poldhu in Cornwall to Signal Hill at St John's, Newfoundland, a feat that had been thought impossible.

The Royal Mint's figures record 4,558,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2001. That compares with 34,984,750 standard Technology £2 coins of the same date. Among the 35 commemorative £2 designs in the Mint's circulating figures, 20 have lower mintages and 14 have higher, so this is a mid-range issue and not a scarce one.

The reverse is by Robert Evans. Radio waves decorate the centre and the outer border, and a spark of electricity links the two zeros of the date 2001 to represent the generation of the signal. The Royal Mint adds that the design includes beams standing for the Morse letter S, and that the pattern of concentric waves symbolises Marconi's influence on communication.

The edge is milled and carries the inscription WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC and MARCONI 1901, the two phrases separated by groups of dots. The obverse has the fourth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin is bimetallic, with a nickel-brass outer ring and a cupro-nickel centre.

Varieties and errors

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

Edge lettering that reads upside down against the Queen's head is not an error. The Royal Mint explains that the inscription is rolled onto the blank before the faces are struck, so it can point either way. Bimetallic £2 coins of any design can also turn up with the inner disc struck off-centre, which Change Checker classes as a mis-strike from mass production and not a separate variety.

Collecting notes

The Marconi £2 was struck for general circulation. The design is made up of fine concentric lines, so look for a coin with all of the rings sharp, the spark between the zeros clear, a centred inner disc and a full edge inscription.

Gold proof, silver proof and silver piedfort versions of the design are catalogued separately. They were collector issues and not part of the circulating mintage. The standard coin of the same year is the Technology £2.
