It is a streamlined steam locomotive, number 6229, now a National Railway Museum locomotive. The Royal Mint says it was built to haul the Coronation Scot service between London Euston and Glasgow and calls it one of the United Kingdom's most striking high-speed steam locomotives.

How do I identify the 2026 2 Pounds - Charles III (Duchess of Hamilton)?

Check the weight 12g and diameter 28.4mm and the metal (bimetallic: copper-nickel centre in nickel brass ring) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The Duchess of Hamilton £2 celebrates a streamlined steam locomotive: number 6229 of the LMS Princess Coronation class, as the coin's edge records. The Royal Mint says it was built to haul the Coronation Scot service between London Euston and Glasgow, and that this is the first time the locomotive has appeared on an official UK coin. Coin Hunter dates the locomotive to 1938.

The design was fixed by a royal proclamation of 15 October 2025, alongside the HMS Beagle £2. It was not among the five designs in the 2026 Annual Sets, and Coin Hunter dates its release to 7 May 2026. The Mint says the coin was made in partnership with the National Science Museum Group. Duchess of Hamilton is a National Railway Museum locomotive, and each purchase supports the museum.

This is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and no figure for the standard Brilliant Uncirculated version has been published.

The reverse is by Gary Breeze, who also designed the 2025 HMS Belfast and RRS Discovery £2 coins. It shows the locomotive in its art deco streamlined casing, with the number 6229 and the name DUCHESS OF HAMILTON. The Mint describes the design as a tribute to the glamour of 1930s rail travel.

The edge carries LMS PRINCESS CORONATION CLASS 6229 in incuse letters. The obverse has the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date.

Varieties and errors

The Royal Mint sells two base-metal versions. The standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin is uncoloured. A second version has the reverse enhanced by colour printing, which the Mint notes is rarely seen on UK £2 coins, and carries a maximum coin mintage of 7,510. No mint errors are documented.

Collecting notes

Both versions come in a Royal Mint pack that tells the locomotive's story. Check which one is being offered: the colour is printed on the reverse, and the Mint lists the two as separate products. Since no circulating issue is recorded, a coin described as found in change deserves a careful look.

The silver proof and silver proof piedfort are both colour-printed, with maximum coin mintages of 2,012 and 1,010. The gold proof is uncoloured, has a plain edge and is limited to 110.

The catalogue also lists a second entry for this coin. Railway collectors may pair it with the 2025 Modern Railway £2.
