History and design
On 27 September 1825 George Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1 hauled hundreds of passengers for 26 miles between Shildon, Darlington and Stockton on the opening day of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The Royal Mint describes it as the first steam-powered passenger train on a public railway, and struck this £2 for the 200th anniversary. The coin was made in partnership with Railway 200, the programme celebrating the bicentenary.
It appeared first in the Royal Mint's 2025 annual sets and was later released as a standalone coin, when the railway enthusiast Francis Bourgeois struck the first example. In announcing that release the Royal Mint said plainly: "There are no plans for the coin to enter general circulation." The coin is also absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage data, which records no £2 coins of any design for 2025.
The reverse is by William Webb. The proclamation describes it as a steam train with passengers, and the Royal Mint identifies the engine as Locomotion No. 1 on the opening day. The inscriptions are THE JOURNEY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD and the dates 1825-2025.
The edge is milled and carries the incuse inscription ACTIVE and LOCOMOTION NO 1, separated by dots, which the Royal Mint calls a tribute to the original locomotive. The obverse has the portrait of the King by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date 2025.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
A Brilliant Uncirculated example came either from the 2025 annual set, where it sits beside the Royal Observatory £2 and the 2025 definitives, or from the individual pack. The Royal Mint's range also lists coin covers and collector sets containing the coin. It has published no figure for the number made.
The design was issued as a silver proof, limited to 4,000, a silver proof piedfort and a gold proof. None of these, and none of the base-metal coins, were issued through banks, so a coin found in change has been spent by a collector.
Two earlier £2 coins also took railways as their subject: the 2004 Trevithick £2, which did circulate, and the Flying Scotsman £2 of 2023.
