History and design
The Royal Mint issued its Duchess of Hamilton £2 in 2026 in two base-metal forms: a standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin and one with the reverse enhanced by colour printing. The catalogue holds two entries for the coin. Coin Hunter dates the release to 7 May 2026.
The subject is the streamlined steam locomotive numbered 6229, built, the Mint says, to haul the Coronation Scot service between London Euston and Glasgow. It is now a National Railway Museum locomotive, and the Mint says this is its first appearance on an official UK coin.
Neither version is a circulating coin. The design is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures. The Mint gives the colour-printed coin a maximum coin mintage of 7,510 and states no limit for the standard one. No sales figures have been published.
The reverse is by Gary Breeze. It shows the locomotive with the number 6229 and the name DUCHESS OF HAMILTON, and the edge carries LMS PRINCESS CORONATION CLASS 6229 in incuse letters. On the colour version the Mint says the printing adds depth and definition to the locomotive's distinctive art deco design, and notes that colour is rarely seen on UK £2 coins.
The obverse has the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date.
Varieties and errors
The two versions differ only in the colour printing on the reverse. The royal proclamation of 15 October 2025 sets out one design and one specification for the base-metal coin and does not mention colour. No mint errors are documented.

Both versions are sold in a Royal Mint pack that tells the locomotive's story. When buying, confirm from the coin itself whether the reverse is coloured, since the two share a name.
