History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – Z - Zebra Crossing. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The alphabet ends at a road crossing. Z for Zebra Crossing closes the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series, the 26 coins issued for circulation in 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. The series was revealed on 1 March 2018, running from the Angel of the North at A to what Coin World called the black-and-white pedestrian crossings at Z.

The 2018 coin had the series' standard 220,000 in the Royal Mint's figures. The 2019 coin had 63,000, level with W and Y and lower than the other 23 letters of that year, most of which had 84,000. The Z total over both dates is 283,000. The Mint lists no ordinary 10p for circulation dated 2018 or 2019, and 33,300,000 dated 2017.

The reverse shows a large letter Z on a zebra crossing. The Royal Mint's text says the crossing takes its name from the alternating black and white stripes on the road, which resemble a zebra's coat, and warns that it is "not to be confused with a pelican crossing".

According to the Mint, the zebra crossing was introduced in 1949 and the name came from James Callaghan, then a junior transport minister, who thought it would be easily understood and remembered. The Mint singles out the crossing on the cover of the Beatles album Abbey Road as possibly the most famous in the world. Its verse for the coin reads: "With Britain's highways and byways we won't be slowed. Assisted by the zebra when crossing the road!"

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team, although Coin Hunter names the designer as Bradley Morgan Johnson. The obverse is the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.
