History and design
This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – Y - Yeoman Warder. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Yeoman Warder 10p is the letter Y in the A to Z series, 26 coins that the Royal Mint issued for circulation in 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. The series was revealed on 1 March 2018. Its subject is the body of ceremonial guardians at the Tower of London, also known as Beefeaters.
In the Royal Mint's figures 220,000 Y coins were issued dated 2018, the same as each of the other 25 letters. The 2019 issue was 63,000. That is the lowest figure anywhere in the series and is shared with the 2019 W and Z coins; the R coin of that year follows at 64,000, and 21 letters had 84,000. Across both dates the Y coin totals 283,000.
A Yeoman Warder stands beside a large letter Y on the reverse, and a key hangs from the letter. Change Checker describes the warders as responsible for looking after prisoners at the Tower and safeguarding the Crown Jewels, a role that fits the key.
The Royal Mint says the Yeoman Warders were formed by Henry VII in 1485. Its page records that as of 2011 there were 37 Yeoman Warders and one chief warder, and that in 2007 Moira Cameron became the first woman to hold the position, after 22 years in the British Army. The Mint's verse for the coin reads: "Ahead to our monarch and the Yeoman Warder, Keeping the Tower and the Palace in order."
The reverse is credited to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.
