History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – V - Village. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

For the letter V in its A to Z of Britain, the Royal Mint chose the village. The coin is one of 26 different 10p pieces, one per letter, issued for circulation in 2018 under the title The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z and revealed on 1 March that year. The Mint's own title for this one is V, Villages.

The Royal Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, or 304,000 in total. Those are the standard figures for the series: all 26 letters had 220,000 in 2018, and 21 of them had 84,000 in 2019. The last ordinary 10p before the series, dated 2017, had a mintage of 33,300,000.

A large letter V stands in front of a village street on the reverse. Change Checker calls the scene an idyllic British village. No particular place is named by the Royal Mint.

The Mint's text for the coin describes villages and village life as a huge part of British culture, places "where everyone seems to know each other". It mentions Flash in the Peak District, which it gives as Britain's highest village at 463m above sea level, and fictional villages familiar from television such as Emmerdale, Midsomer and Dibley. The accompanying verse runs: "We travel through villages, valleys and dales. The breadth of the country England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales."

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team, although Coin Hunter names the artist as P J Lynch. The obverse is the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.
