History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – S - Stonehenge. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Stonehenge is the letter S in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series, the 26 circulating coins revealed on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. It is one of the letters for which a poll result was published. Coin World reported that UK residents were polled in 2017 and that Stonehenge was named the most famous southern landmark by 32 percent, ahead of the White Cliffs of Dover on 30 percent and the London skyline on 17 percent.

The Royal Mint's page for the coin places the monument in Wiltshire and calls it often considered the world's most famous prehistoric monument. It dates the first monument, a circular earthwork, to about 3,000 BC, and says that by 2,500 BC the large sarsen stones and smaller bluestones had been raised. Stonehenge was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986. The Mint's verse sums it up as "its purpose a mystery".

The Royal Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 of the S coin dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, a total of 304,000.

The reverse shows the standing stones with the sun rising through them and a large letter S. The Royal Mint's page for the full set of 26 names Stonehenge as its example of the Great British landmarks in the series.

Both the Royal Mint and Coin Hunter credit the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date. The coin is nickel-plated steel and has a milled edge.
