History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – M - Mackintosh. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Mackintosh 10p is the letter M in the A to Z series of 26 circulating 10p coins that the Royal Mint revealed on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. It is one of the series' jokes at the nation's own expense. The Royal Mint introduces it by asking what could be more British than complaining about the weather.

The coat is named after Charles Macintosh, whom the Royal Mint calls a Glaswegian chemist. Its page explains that the cloth was made by sandwiching a layer of naphtha and rubber between two layers of fabric, and that early versions had a habit of melting in hot sun before the process was improved. The Mint uses both spellings, Macintosh for the inventor and Mackintosh for the coin.

The Royal Mint's circulating figures show 220,000 of the M coin dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, which adds up to 304,000.

A Mackintosh raincoat stands behind a large letter M, with rain falling. The weather the Mint jokes about is part of the design.

The Royal Mint gives the reverse designer as The Royal Mint Team, while Coin Hunter attributes the design to P J Lynch. On the obverse is the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date. The coin has a milled edge and is struck in nickel-plated steel, the 10p alloy since January 2012.
