History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – H - Houses of Parliament. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Houses of Parliament stand for the letter H in the A to Z 10p series that the Royal Mint revealed on 1 March 2018. Coin World's report of the launch quoted the Mint's chief executive, Anne Jessopp, pointing to this coin as the series at its most serious, with Parliament representing democracy and freedom of speech.

The Royal Mint's page for the coin describes the building as the oldest royal palace in London, in continuous use since the first half of the 11th century. It records that the original Houses of Parliament were destroyed by fire in 1834 and took 30 years to rebuild. It also notes the Clock Tower that houses Big Ben and the 102m Victoria Tower, whose flagpole flies the Union flag when Parliament is sitting.

The Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, or 304,000 over both dates.

The reverse is an emblem, not a view of the building. Change Checker describes it as a large letter H above the official logo for the Houses of Parliament, and Coin Hunter calls the emblem the badge of the Houses of Parliament. That makes it one of two coins in the first ten letters built around an existing emblem, the other being the 007 logo on the B coin.

The Royal Mint's page for this letter credits the reverse to The Royal Mint, and its page for the full set says The Royal Mint Team. The obverse is the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.
