History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – G - Greenwich Mean Time. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Greenwich Mean Time is the subject of the letter G in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series of 2018. Coin World's report of the launch on 1 March 2018 singled it out, with the World Wide Web coin, as one of the designs marking British scientific and technological achievement, saying it celebrates the country's naval history and the setting of a global timescale.

The Royal Mint's page for the coin describes the Royal Observatory Greenwich as the home of GMT. It says a single baseline time zone for the world was first proposed in 1876 by the engineer Sandford Fleming, that the International Meridian Conference later agreed a universal day beginning at Greenwich midnight, and that most countries had adopted hourly time zones by the 1930s. Change Checker adds that GMT was adopted by Parliament on 2 August 1880.

The Mint struck 220,000 for circulation dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, which is 304,000 in total.

The reverse shows a globe with a large letter G. Coin Hunter describes a marked line on the globe indicating the Greenwich Meridian. It stands for an idea, where neighbouring letters such as D and F show an object.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark and carries the denomination and date. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.
