History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – E - English Breakfast. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The fifth coin in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p alphabet marks the full English breakfast. It was one of 26 ten pence designs revealed on 1 March 2018 under the title The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z, all of them released into general circulation.

The Royal Mint's page for the coin describes the meal, also called a fry up, by reference to the English Breakfast Society: bacon, eggs, sausage, black pudding, baked beans, grilled tomato, fried bread and toast. It dates the tradition to the Victorian era, when two meals a day was the norm and breakfast was a leisurely social occasion for the landed gentry. Change Checker says the coin celebrates one of the nation's best loved meals.

The Mint's circulating mintage figures are 220,000 for 2018 and 84,000 for 2019, making 304,000. That compares with 33,300,000 standard 10p coins dated 2017.

The reverse depicts a traditional English breakfast alongside a large letter E. It is one of three food subjects in the first ten letters, with Fish and Chips and Ice Cream.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse shows the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date around it. The coin is struck in nickel-plated steel and the edge is milled.
