History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – D - Double Decker Bus. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

D is for Double Decker Bus in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series, the set of 26 ten pence designs revealed on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. Coin World reported that the coins would roll out into circulation and be available at selected post offices from the first week of March.

The Royal Mint's page for the coin calls the red double decker a symbol of London known around the world. It traces the story back to 1829, when George Shillibeer began running a horse-drawn omnibus service from Paddington to the City, and to 1855, when the London General Omnibus Company was formed. The Mint's introduction to the full set names the bus alongside Stonehenge as an example of what the alphabet was meant to salute.

In the Royal Mint's circulating figures the D coin has 220,000 dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, giving 304,000 in total.

The reverse shows a double decker bus with a large letter D. Change Checker notes that double deckers are used for mass transport across Great Britain, with the red London bus the best known example.

The reverse is credited to The Royal Mint Team. On the obverse is the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, together with the denomination and the date. The 10p has been struck in nickel-plated steel since January 2012 and has a milled edge.
