History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – A - Angel of the North. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

In March 2018 the Royal Mint issued 26 different 10p coins, one for each letter of the alphabet, under the title The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. The series was revealed on 1 March 2018 and the coins went into general circulation that month. Change Checker describes them as the first commemorative UK 10p coins.

The letter A coin shows the Angel of the North. The Royal Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 for the 2018 date, the same as every other letter that year. The series was struck again in 2019 in smaller numbers, with 84,000 of the A coin, bringing the total across both dates to 304,000.

For comparison, the Royal Mint lists 33,300,000 ordinary 10p coins dated 2017. In 2018 and 2019 it recorded no standard 10p for circulation at all, so the A to Z coins were the only circulating 10p pieces of those two dates.

The reverse shows the Angel of the North beside a large letter A. The sculpture, by Antony Gormley, stands at the entrance to the North East of England, and the Royal Mint records that its wings were spread on 16 February 1998. The Mint describes it as the largest sculpture in the UK, made of weather-resistant steel and weighing about 200 tonnes.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date. The coin is nickel-plated steel, the alloy used for the 10p since January 2012, and has a milled edge.
