Is the King Arthur 10p rare?

History and design

King Arthur is the letter K in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series, 26 circulating coins revealed on 1 March 2018 under the title The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. Coin World reported that the themes were chosen after a poll of UK residents in 2017. Change Checker describes the set as the first commemorative UK 10p coins.

The Royal Mint's page for the coin calls Arthur one of the most famous characters of myth and legend. In the legend he lived in the mythical city of Camelot and formed a Round Table of some 150 knights. The Mint is careful about the history: it says his existence has been widely debated, and that the most that can be said is that a man named Arthur, or Arturus, led warriors who resisted the invading Saxons, Jutes and others in the fifth and sixth centuries AD.

The Royal Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 for the 2018 date and 84,000 for 2019, a total of 304,000. Both figures are the standard ones for the series.

The reverse shows King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table circling a large letter K. The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. Coin Hunter names an individual designer, P J Lynch, which the Mint's own pages do not confirm.

The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and the date. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge, like every 10p made since January 2012.

Collecting notes

Read the date on the obverse, because the reverse is the same on both issues and the 2019 coin had well under half the 2018 figure. Within the 2019 series the K coin is not one of the short ones: 21 of the 26 letters share its 84,000, and only Q, R, W, Y and Z were lower in the Royal Mint's figures.

The Royal Mint also sold the coin uncirculated, including in sets of all 26 letters, and as a sterling silver proof dated 2018 with the same weight and diameter as the circulating coin. The neighbouring letters are J, Jubilee and L, Loch Ness Monster.
