History and design
An ice cream cone represents the letter I in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series. The Mint revealed the 26 designs on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z, and its own title for this one is I for Ice-Cream Cone. In the rhyme that runs through the series, the coin is the stop for a day by the coast.
The Royal Mint's page for the coin calls ice cream the nation's favourite treat. It says ice cream recipes first appeared in England in the 18th century, citing the one published in London in 1718 in Mrs Mary Eales's Receipts. Change Checker goes back further, noting that ice cream was served at the Feast of St George at Windsor Castle in 1671.
The Royal Mint's circulating figures are 220,000 dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, a total of 304,000. It lists 33,300,000 ordinary 10p coins dated 2017 for comparison.
The reverse shows an ice cream cone with a flake, set beside a large letter I. It is the third food design among the first ten letters, after English Breakfast and Fish and Chips.
