History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Last Round Pound. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The round pound was first issued on 21 April 1983 and was withdrawn on 15 October 2017, after the 12-sided coin took its place. By 2016 no round pounds were being struck for circulation. The Royal Mint marked the end of the series with one final design, sold as The Last Round Pound.
This coin was never issued for circulation. The Royal Mint's product page says plainly that "this farewell coin will not enter circulation", and its circulating mintage figures list no round pound for 2016. It was sold in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack, included in the 2016 annual sets, and struck as silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof coins.
Because it was a collector issue there is no circulating mintage. The Royal Mint's sales figures for 2016 list 96,089 single Brilliant Uncirculated packs, 68,537 Brilliant Uncirculated coins supplied in tubes, 40,848 Strike Your Own coins sold as a visitor centre exclusive and 9,929 two-coin sets pairing it with the new 12-sided coin.
The reverse is by Gregory Cameron, Bishop of St Asaph. The royal proclamation describes it as a lion, unicorn, stag and a dragon surrounding a crown, accompanied by the denomination ONE POUND. The four heraldic beasts stand for the four nations of the United Kingdom.
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF 2016. The edge is milled and bears the incuse inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN, a Latin motto usually translated as an ornament and a safeguard. The proclamation specifies the base-metal coin as nickel-brass, 22.5mm across and weighing 9.5g.
