History and design
The round pound was first issued on 21 April 1983 and was withdrawn on 15 October 2017, after the 12-sided coin took its place. By 2016 no round pounds were being struck for circulation. The Royal Mint marked the end of the series with one final design, sold as The Last Round Pound.
This coin was never issued for circulation. The Royal Mint's product page says plainly that "this farewell coin will not enter circulation", and its circulating mintage figures list no round pound for 2016. It was sold in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack, included in the 2016 annual sets, and struck as silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof coins.
Because it was a collector issue there is no circulating mintage. The Royal Mint's sales figures for 2016 list 96,089 single Brilliant Uncirculated packs, 68,537 Brilliant Uncirculated coins supplied in tubes, 40,848 Strike Your Own coins sold as a visitor centre exclusive and 9,929 two-coin sets pairing it with the new 12-sided coin.

The proclamation specifies the base-metal coin as nickel-brass, 22.5mm across and weighing 9.5g.
Collecting notes
Any example found loose has come out of a pack, tube or set. A coin showing wear has simply been spent or carried by someone, since none were released through banks. Round pounds lost legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017, so this coin can no longer be spent in shops.
Look for the original fold-out Royal Mint pack if buying the Brilliant Uncirculated coin, and check the edge lettering is sharp. The precious-metal versions share the design: the Royal Mint's sales figures show 7,491 silver proofs, 2,993 silver piedforts and 499 gold proofs. The proclamation sets the silver piedfort at 19g, double the weight of the standard silver coin.
There were two other pound coins dated 2016. Dealer references record that the plain Royal Shield round pound of that date was also confined to sets, and the first 12-sided £1 coins carry the date 2016 although they were not released until March 2017. The last round pounds struck for circulation are dated 2015, among them the Royal Arms coin with the fifth portrait.
