Common questions
How much is the 2000 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Welsh Dragon worth?
Verified sold prices for the 2000 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Welsh Dragon run from £2.68 to £5.93 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
Is the 2000 Welsh Dragon £1 rare?
No. It is one of the most plentiful round pounds. The Royal Mint's figures give 109,496,500 struck for circulation, the sixth highest of the 41 round £1 entries and the largest for any round pound with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen.
How many 2000 dragon £1 coins were made?
The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 109,496,500 for circulation. That is more than three times the 34,503,501 struck when the same dragon design was first issued in 1995, and the two dates together come to 144,000,001 coins.
Who designed the dragon on the 2000 £1 coin?
Norman Sillman, a sculptor who designed all four national reverses of the heraldic £1 series. The Royal Mint describes the design as a dragon passant, meaning with one foot raised. The Queen's portrait on the other side is by Ian Rank-Broadley.
What is written on the edge of the Welsh Dragon £1?
PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD, which is Welsh. Check Your Change translates it as "true I am to my country". The Royal Mint lists the same inscription for the Welsh pounds of 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000 and for the Welsh floral pound of 2013.
Is the 2000 £1 coin still legal tender?
No. The round £1 was replaced by the 12-sided coin from 28 March 2017 and lost its legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017. The Royal Mint says most UK high street banks will still accept round pounds as a deposit into an account.
How do I identify the 2000 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Welsh Dragon?
Check the weight 9.5g and diameter 22.5mm and the metal (nickel brass) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Welsh dragon pound was first struck in 1995 as part of the heraldic series of round £1 coins. When the cycle of national designs came round to Wales again in 2000, the dragon was reused with the new portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley.
It was struck in very large numbers. The Royal Mint's figures give 109,496,500 for circulation, more than three times the 34,503,501 of the 1995 coin. That is the sixth highest of the 41 round £1 entries in the Mint's figures and the largest for any round pound with the Rank-Broadley portrait. The Mint's figures show no circulating round £1 dated 1998 or 1999, so this was also the first pound with that portrait to be issued for circulation.
Round pounds were replaced by the 12-sided £1 from 28 March 2017 and lost their legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
Norman Sillman's reverse shows the dragon of Wales. The Royal Mint calls it a dragon passant and explains that passant refers to the dragon's position, with one foot raised.
Sillman worked on coins for the Royal Mint for some 40 years, for many countries besides Britain. "More often than not the countries wanted you to have the ideas, and that was fine by me, because my interests are art, anthropology and history," he told the Diss Express in 2011.
The milled edge carries the Welsh inscription PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD, translated as "true I am to my country". The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, which the Royal Mint lists for round pounds from 1998 to 2015.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
This is among the easiest round pounds to find, so there is no reason to settle for a worn one. Look for full detail on the dragon and a clear, complete edge inscription. A genuine round pound should match the Royal Mint specification of 9.5 g and 22.5 mm.
The dragon appears with two portraits. The earlier coin, with Raphael Maklouf's portrait, is the 1995 Welsh Dragon £1, and it had a much smaller mintage. The date tells them apart at once.
Round pounds can no longer be spent, so the coin does not turn up in change. The 2000 design was also struck for collectors in silver, as a proof and as a piedfort. The Northern Ireland coin that followed is the 2001 Celtic Cross £1.
