History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Scottish Lion. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The lion rampant pound was first issued in 1994 as Scotland's coin in the heraldic series. Five years later the round £1 cycle came back to Scotland and the design was used again, now with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen. This time it did not go into circulation.
The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures have no round £1 for 1999, as they have none for 1998. Check Your Change gives the 1999 coin's mintage for circulation as none and says it was only issued in special Royal Mint packaging, in numbers likely to be in the tens of thousands. The dealer M J Hughes Coins gives the reason as lower demand for pounds after the £2 coin was introduced. The 1994 coin, by contrast, had 29,752,525 struck.
Like every round pound, it lost its legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The reverse is by Norman Sillman and the Royal Mint describes it as a lion rampant, representing Scotland. The Mint explains that rampant refers to the lion standing upright with forelegs raised and claws unsheathed, and that the symbol was first used to represent the Scottish kingdom by King Alexander II in the 13th century.
The milled edge reads NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT. Check Your Change translates it as "no one provokes me with impunity" and describes it as the Latin motto of the Stuart dynasty. The Royal Mint lists the same words on the edge of the Thistle pounds of 1984 and 1989.
The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, which the Royal Mint lists for round pounds from 1998 to 2015.
