History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Celtic Cross. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The 2001 round pound was Northern Ireland's turn in the yearly rotation of £1 designs. It reused the Celtic cross first issued in 1996, this time with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen in place of Raphael Maklouf's.
The Royal Mint's figures give 63,968,065 struck for circulation, the 13th highest of the 41 round £1 entries. Three heraldic designs were issued for circulation a second time, and this is the only one that was struck in smaller numbers on its return: the 1996 coin had 89,886,000. The two dates together come to 153,854,065.
It still far outnumbers most Northern Ireland pounds. In the Mint's figures the flax plant coins had 10,409,501 (1986) and 38,443,575 (1991), the 2006 Egyptian Arch 38,938,000, the 2010 Belfast 6,205,000 and the 2014 floral coin 5,780,000. Only the 1996 Celtic Cross is higher. All of them lost legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The Royal Mint describes Norman Sillman's reverse as a Celtic cross with a pimpernel flower in the centre, surrounded by an ancient torc, representing Northern Ireland. It is the design Sillman produced for the 1996 pound, which the Royal Mint lists for both years.
The milled edge reads DECUS ET TUTAMEN, the Latin inscription used on the first round pound in 1983 and translated as "an ornament and safeguard". The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, which the Royal Mint lists for round pounds from 1998 to 2015.
