silver proof, silver Piedfort and gold proof formats. This guide lists every coin, every variant
and current 2026 realised prices, with the silver Piedforts the genuine appreciation play.

The Mr Men were created by Roger Hargreaves in 1971. The first six characters
(Mr Tickle, Mr Greedy, Mr Happy, Mr Nosey, Mr Sneeze, Mr Bump) were published as small-format
illustrated books by Thurman Publishing in May 1971. The series was an immediate commercial
success, with over 100 million copies sold worldwide by 2019. Hargreaves added the Little Miss
series in 1981. He died in 1988; his son Adam Hargreaves has continued the franchise.
The Royal Mint’s 2021 coin launch marked the 50th anniversary of the
original 1971 publication. The licence was struck with THOIP (a Sanrio subsidiary that
acquired the Mr Men IP from the Hargreaves family in 2004). Royal Mint coin design uses
Hargreaves’s original 1971 illustrations as the source material, engraved at miniature
scale by the Royal Mint design team.

The Piedfort is the play. Mintages of 2,750–4,500 against silver proof
mintages of ~10,000 mean the Piedfort variant is meaningfully scarcer and has delivered the
strongest secondary-market returns, 80–180% over original retail. A complete 12-coin
Piedfort set is genuinely hard to assemble; complete sets clear £3,000–£4,000.
Authentication
Five checks for every Mr Men 50p:
Weight 8.00 g ± 0.05 g (digital scale).
Diameter 27.30 mm flat-to-flat across the heptagon.
Shape true heptagonal Reuleaux polygon (constant width when rotated against callipers).
Edge plain (un-reeded), sharp, no casting seam.
Relief the character’s body, facial features and limbs should be crisp; cast counterfeits show soft details across the entire design.
Counterfeit risk is low because the cupronickel material has no bullion value. For high-value
Piedforts and gold proofs, professional grading at CGS UK,
PCGS or
NGC is worth the £25–£50 fee.
How does it compare to other character 50p series?
Harry Potter 50p (2022 onwards), closer in release model (collector-only), broader appeal, larger Warner Bros. licensing footprint. Comparable per-coin pricing.
Beatrix Potter 50p (2016–2019), hybrid model (some circulating); more established secondary market; comparable per-Piedfort prices.
Snowman 50p (2018 onwards), pure collector-only; lower mintages on some variants; comparable per-Piedfort prices.
BU singles in original Royal Mint card, eBay UK sold-auction format, expect £15–£25 after fees.
Silver proofs and Piedforts, eBay or specialist dealer (Change Checker). Dealers typically pay 60–75% of retail; eBay realisation is higher but takes longer.
Gold proofs or complete sets, Baldwin’s, Spink or Noonans specialist auction. 15–20% buyer’s premium but typically higher realisation.

Frequently asked questions
When was the Mr Men 50p series released?
The Royal Mint launched the Mr Men & Little Miss 50p programme in July 2021 to mark the 50th anniversary of Roger Hargreaves’s creation of the Mr Men characters (first published 1971). The initial release was four designs (Mr Tickle, Mr Happy, Mr Bump, Mr Strong). Subsequent releases through 2022 and 2023 added further characters, taking the series to 12 designs in total. None of the Mr Men 50ps entered general circulation, the entire series is collector-only, sold direct via the Royal Mint shop in BU, silver proof, silver Piedfort and gold proof formats.
How much is a Mr Men 50p worth?
Depends on character and finish. BU in Royal Mint card: £15–£25 per coin; complete 12-coin BU album typically £180–£240. Colour silver proof: £80–£130 per coin. Silver Piedfort (mintages 2,750–4,500): £180–£280 per coin. Gold proof (mintages 350–600): £1,700–£2,300 each. The 2021 Mr Tickle (first in the series, mintage approximately 4,500 in silver Piedfort) is the most-collected single coin. Loose coins out of original Royal Mint packaging trade at 25–35% discount across all finishes.
Which Mr Men characters are on the 50p coins?
The 12-coin series covers: Mr Tickle (2021, first), Mr Happy (2021), Mr Bump (2021), Mr Strong (2021), Little Miss Sunshine (2022), Mr Greedy (2022), Mr Grumpy (2022), Little Miss Giggles (2022), Mr Funny (2023), Mr Lazy (2023), Little Miss Brainy (2023), and Mr Adventure (2023). The Royal Mint has indicated the series may continue with further characters in 2026; check the Royal Mint shop for announcements.
Did Mr Men 50ps enter UK circulation?
No. Every Mr Men 50p is a collector-only issue sold direct via the Royal Mint shop in sealed presentation packaging. Unlike the 2018 Paddington Bear 50ps (which entered circulation at 5–9 million mintage) or the 2018 Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit (mintage 19.9 million, part-circulating), no Mr Men 50p was ever released into change. Anyone selling a “found in change” Mr Men 50p is either selling a removed-from-card BU coin or misidentifying a different coin.
Who designed the Mr Men 50ps?
The reverses were engraved by the Royal Mint design team working from Roger Hargreaves’s original 1971 illustrations, with rights licensed via THOIP (a Sanrio company that owns the Mr Men IP). Each design depicts the character in their canonical pose from the original picture-book illustrations. The 2021–2022 issues use the Jody Clark fifth-portrait effigy of Elizabeth II on the obverse; the 2023 issues onwards use the Martin Jennings Charles III effigy following the late Queen’s death in September 2022.
Are Mr Men 50ps a good investment?
They’re a respectable collectable rather than an investment-grade asset. BU coins have approximately doubled from Royal Mint retail (£10) to current £15–£25 over 2021–2026, which is solid but not extraordinary. Silver Piedforts have outperformed every other format, with mintages of 2,750–4,500 driving 80–180% appreciation over original retail of £110–£125. The series’s strongest investment case is the complete 12-coin Piedfort set, which is genuinely difficult to assemble (low mintages, sealed-condition preservation) and would clear £3,000+ at auction in 2026. For more proven appreciation, see sovereigns.
How can I tell a real Mr Men 50p from a fake?
Five checks: weight 8.00 g ± 0.05 g; diameter 27.30 mm flat-to-flat across the heptagon; shape a true heptagonal Reuleaux polygon; edge plain (un-reeded), sharp; relief the character’s body shape, facial features and limb details are crisp on genuine coins. Counterfeit Mr Men 50ps are uncommon because the cupronickel material has no bullion value and the collector premium isn’t high enough to support forgery economics. What exists is mostly resin novelty replicas (fail weight by 3–5 g) and altered ordinary 50ps with hand-painted character art. See our coin weight identifier for fast verification.
Where should I sell a Mr Men 50p?
BU singles in original Royal Mint card: eBay UK sold-auction format. Silver proofs and Piedforts: eBay for speed (£180–£280 realisation on Piedforts), specialist auction (Baldwin’s, Spink, Noonans) for higher realisations on rarer coins. Gold proofs and complete sets: specialist auction strongly preferred, the bidder reach is meaningfully wider than eBay for high-value modern UK material.
What other character 50p series should I compare?
The closest direct comparisons: Harry Potter 50p series (2022 onwards, 12 coins to date, also collector-only); Beatrix Potter 50p (13 circulating coins 2016–2018, hybrid circulating/collector); Peter Rabbit 50p subset of Beatrix Potter; Snowman 50p (2018 onwards, collector-only); Paddington Bear 50ps (2018 onwards, 4 circulating + collector formats); Gruffalo 50p (2019, two designs, collector-only).
