History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Paddington at the Tower. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Paddington returned to the 50p in 2019 with two new coins, after the two of 2018 that marked the 60th anniversary of A Bear Called Paddington. The Royal Mint presented the 2019 pair as a new adventure for the bear from Darkest Peru. This coin takes him to the Tower of London, where the Mint's sales text has him meeting its most famous residents and learning why the ravens matter so much to the landmark.

The Royal Mint's figures give a circulating mintage of 9,001,000. The St Paul's coin has the same figure, and no Paddington 50p was struck in greater numbers: the 2018 Station coin stands at 5,001,000 and the Palace coin at 5,901,000.

The reverse was designed by David Knapton, who is credited with all four Paddington 50p coins. The proclamation describes it as "a design depicting Paddington Bear outside the White Tower at the Tower of London".

The reverse carries no inscription. The words 50 PENCE sit on the obverse instead, around the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, in the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE with the date 2019. The edge is plain.
