History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Paddington at St Paul's. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Paddington at St Paul's 50p is one of two Paddington coins issued in 2019. They followed the pair of 2018, which the Royal Mint released to mark the 60th anniversary of A Bear Called Paddington. The 2018 coins placed the bear at Paddington Station and Buckingham Palace. The 2019 coins sent him to two more London landmarks, the Tower of London and St Paul's Cathedral.
The Royal Mint's figures give a circulating mintage of 9,001,000, identical to the Tower coin. Both 2019 coins were struck in greater numbers than the 2018 pair, which stand at 5,001,000 and 5,901,000. That makes this one of the easier Paddington coins to find.
The reverse is by David Knapton, whom the Royal Mint credits with all four Paddington 50p coins. The proclamation describes it simply as "a design depicting Paddington Bear outside St Paul's Cathedral". The Royal Mint's packaging for the coin took the form of Paddington's scrapbook from his visit to the cathedral.
There is no lettering on the reverse. The denomination was moved to the obverse, which carries the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE and the date 2019. The edge is plain.
