History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Diverse Britain. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Diversity Built Britain 50p entered circulation in October 2020, during Black History Month. The Treasury described it as a coin to mark the profound contribution minority communities have made to the shared history of the United Kingdom. The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, commissioned it earlier that year after discussions with the We Too Built Britain campaign, and it was announced as the first in a series.

The Treasury said around 2.5 million coins would be released in the first week. The Royal Mint's figures give a final circulating mintage of 10,300,000. That is the highest of any commemorative 50p dated 2018 or later in the Royal Mint's figures, a little above the 10,001,000 of the Withdrawal from the European Union coin of the same year.

The reverse is by Dominique Evans, a coin designer at the Royal Mint. The Treasury said it was inspired by her own experience growing up as a mixed-race woman. The words DIVERSITY BUILT BRITAIN are set over a geodome, which Evans described as "a series of interconnecting lines and triangles that form a network", adding that "each part is equal, and symbolises a community of connection and strength". The proclamation calls it a web symbolising the connections between communities across the country.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE and the date 2020. The edge is plain.
