How many Queen Elizabeth II memorial 50p coins were made?

9,600,000 were struck for circulation, according to the Royal Mint's mintage figures. The first 4.9 million went to 9,452 Post Office branches during December 2022, and the Royal Mint said the rest would follow in line with demand.

Is the Queen Elizabeth II memorial 50p rare?

No. With 9,600,000 struck it is a common coin, close to the 9,500,000 Royal Shield 50p coins of the same date and almost twice the 5,000,000 of the 2022 Pride 50p. Its interest lies in being the first circulating coin of the new reign.

Who designed the Queen Elizabeth II memorial 50p?

The reverse reuses the design made for the 1953 Coronation Crown, designed by the herald painter Edgar Fuller and modelled by Cecil Thomas. The obverse is the first coinage portrait of King Charles III, by the sculptor Martin Jennings.

When did the King Charles III 50p enter circulation?

On Thursday 8 December 2022, through Post Office branches around the UK, where it was given out in change. A commemorative version had gone on sale from the Royal Mint on 3 October 2022, and production of the circulating coins began at Llantrisant later that month.

Why does the King face left on the memorial 50p?

The Royal Mint says the portrait faces left in keeping with tradition, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II. The effigy was sculpted by Martin Jennings from a photograph and was personally approved by the King.

How do I identify the 2022 50 Pence - Charles III Life and legacy of the Queen?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

This 50p commemorates the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, and it was the first coin to carry the portrait of King Charles III into circulation. The Royal Mint unveiled the King's effigy in 2022 on two memorial coins, a crown piece and this 50p, and said the 50p would enter circulation so that everyone could hold a piece of history.

Collector versions went on sale on 3 October 2022. Production of the circulating coins began at Llantrisant later that month, and they reached the public on Thursday 8 December 2022 through Post Office branches. The first 4.9 million were spread across 9,452 branches during December.

The Royal Mint's figures give a circulating mintage of 9,600,000, close to the 9,500,000 Royal Shield 50p coins of the same date.

The reverse was not new. It is the design made for the 1953 Coronation Crown, by the herald painter Edgar Fuller and modelled by Cecil Thomas. The proclamation describes the four quarterings of the Royal Arms, each in its own shield and arranged in saltire, with a rose, a thistle, a sprig of shamrock and a leek between them, the Crown in the centre and the date 2022 at the base.

The obverse is by the sculptor Martin Jennings. The King faces left, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II, in keeping with tradition. The inscription reads CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The reverse has no lettering apart from the date, and the obverse has no date. Both are correct for this coin, because the denomination was placed around the King's portrait and the date sits beneath the shields.

With 9,600,000 struck, the coin is common in change and coins of both monarchs circulate together. The Royal Mint's sales figures record 104,458 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 89,489 in trade packaging, along with 21,422 silver proofs, 4,595 silver proof piedforts, 1,105 gold proofs, 86 gold proof piedforts and 106 platinum proofs.

Among the 2022 coins with the Queen's own portrait is the Pride 50p, which the Royal Mint named as the last design to enter general circulation with her portrait.
