History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Zog. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Zog 50p was released on 12 June 2025, which the Royal Mint billed as Zog Day. It marks 15 years since Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler published their picture book about an accident-prone dragon trying to earn a golden star at Dragon School. The Mint describes it as the first time the character has appeared on an official UK coin.

The coin joined the Mint's childhood characters series, which had already covered two other Donaldson and Scheffler creations, The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child. It was produced in partnership with Magic Light Pictures, the company behind the animated adaptation of the story.

This is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, where the only 50p dated 2025 is the Atlantic Salmon definitive, and the launch release said the base metal version would be available exclusively from the Mint.

The reverse shows Zog in flight, taken from a remastered illustration by Axel Scheffler. The royal proclamation describes it simply as "a depiction of the dragon Zog accompanied by the inscription ZOG". The Royal Mint credits the design to Axel Scheffler and Magic Light Pictures.

The denomination is on the other side. The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.
