History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III TIE Fighter. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The TIE Fighter 50p is the second of four 2024 coins in the Royal Mint's Star Wars vehicles series. The Millennium Falcon opened the series on 18 March 2024, and the Mint announced then that a TIE Fighter, an X-Wing and the Death Star II would follow during the year. The series came after four coins showing pairs of characters, which began in 2023.

The coins are licensed products made in collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm. The Mint calls the TIE Fighter the trademark starfighter of the Galactic Empire.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the Mint launched the series as collectable coins sold through its website. No mintage has been published for the standard base metal coin.

The Mint credits the reverse to Lucasfilm Ltd. and says the artwork is based on imagery from Lucasfilm's official library. It describes a detailed depiction of a TIE Fighter as it appears in the films, from the shape of the wings to the pattern of the central cockpit window. The proclamation gives the design as a depiction of a TIE Fighter with the inscription STAR WARS.

The reverse also has a lenticular feature, a panel that changes as the coin is tilted in the light. Here it shows the insignia of the Galactic Empire and the outline of a TIE Fighter. The Mint says a picosecond laser was used to put the designs onto the coin-making tools.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
