History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III The Patronus. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Patronus 50p is a 2025 collector coin from the Royal Mint's Harry Potter range. It marks the scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in which, in the Mint's words, the boy wizard "practises a powerful defensive charm" during his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The Mint groups it with three other 50p coins celebrating moments from the stories: The Winged Keys and The Black Lake, dated 2024, and The Flying Car, issued earlier in 2025. Coin Hunter gives the release date as 31 July 2025, the day the Mint opened a launch competition with silver proofs of all four coins as the prize.

It was not issued for circulation. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list only the Atlantic Salmon 50p for 2025, and the Mint sold this design as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin. No sales figure has been published.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Warner Bros and names no individual artist. The proclamation describes it as "a depiction of Harry Potter casting a spell accompanied by the inscription EXPECTO PATRONUM".

The same proclamation, dated December 2024, authorised The Flying Car design. The denomination is on the obverse, which carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.
