History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Stegosaurus. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Stegosaurus 50p is the second of three dinosaur coins in a Royal Mint collection built around famous museum specimens, made with the Natural History Museum and dated 2024. The Mint unveiled the series on 14 December 2023 with the Tyrannosaurus, launched the Stegosaurus on 12 February 2024 and finished with the Diplodocus. It counts the three as the third collection in its Tales of the Earth series, after the Dinosauria and Mary Anning coins.

This is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint presented it throughout as a collectable 50p sold from its website. No sales figures for 2024 coins have been published.

The reverse is by the British palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, who drew the earlier Tales of the Earth coins. He worked with guidance from Professor Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum, and the Mint describes each design in the set as a scientifically accurate reconstruction of the animal and the environment it lived in. The inscription reads STEGOSAURUS JURASSIC.

The coin pays tribute to the museum's own Stegosaurus specimen, known as Sophie, which the Mint calls the most complete Stegosaurus skeleton ever discovered. Nicholls said of the project: "I started drawing dinosaurs as soon as I could hold a pencil".

The obverse carries the King's portrait by Martin Jennings with his titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
