Common questions
How much is the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III Stegosaurus worth?
Verified sold prices for the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III Stegosaurus run from £6.63 to £79.99 across 4 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
Was the Stegosaurus 50p released into circulation?
No. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint launched it on 12 February 2024 as a collectable 50p sold from its website. Any example found in change was spent by someone who had bought it.
How many Stegosaurus 50p coins were made?
There is no circulating mintage, and the Royal Mint has not published sales figures for its 2024 coins. The standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin had no stated limit. The Mint did set limits for other editions, including 15,000 for the colour Brilliant Uncirculated coin.
Who designed the Stegosaurus 50p?
The reverse is by the British palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, who also drew the Royal Mint's earlier Tales of the Earth coins. He worked with guidance from Professor Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum. The King's portrait on the obverse is by Martin Jennings.
Who is Sophie on the Stegosaurus 50p?
Sophie is the Natural History Museum's Stegosaurus specimen. The Royal Mint describes it as the most complete Stegosaurus skeleton ever discovered and says the 50p pays tribute to it. The coin's packaging tells the specimen's story.
Which other coins are in the set with the Stegosaurus 50p?
It is the second of three 50p coins in the Royal Mint's 2024 dinosaur collection, all dated 2024 and all designed by Robert Nicholls. The Tyrannosaurus came first and the Diplodocus third. The Mint counts this as the third collection in its Tales of the Earth series.
How do I identify the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III Stegosaurus?
Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Stegosaurus 50p is the second of three dinosaur coins in a Royal Mint collection built around famous museum specimens, made with the Natural History Museum and dated 2024. The Mint unveiled the series on 14 December 2023 with the Tyrannosaurus, launched the Stegosaurus on 12 February 2024 and finished with the Diplodocus. It counts the three as the third collection in its Tales of the Earth series, after the Dinosauria and Mary Anning coins.
This is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint presented it throughout as a collectable 50p sold from its website. No sales figures for 2024 coins have been published.
The reverse is by the British palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, who drew the earlier Tales of the Earth coins. He worked with guidance from Professor Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum, and the Mint describes each design in the set as a scientifically accurate reconstruction of the animal and the environment it lived in. The inscription reads STEGOSAURUS JURASSIC.
The coin pays tribute to the museum's own Stegosaurus specimen, known as Sophie, which the Mint calls the most complete Stegosaurus skeleton ever discovered. Nicholls said of the project: "I started drawing dinosaurs as soon as I could hold a pencil".
The obverse carries the King's portrait by Martin Jennings with his titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The standard coin was sold as a Brilliant Uncirculated piece in a pack written for younger readers, with no stated limit. The Royal Mint also issued the design with a colour-printed reverse, limited to 15,000 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 5,000 in silver proof, along with a plain silver proof limited to 500 and a gold proof limited to 100. Those are issue limits, not sales totals.
Because it never circulated, a typical example is still in its Royal Mint pack. A loose coin should be checked for handling marks, since one that has been carried or spent no longer has an uncirculated finish.
The other two coins of the set are the Tyrannosaurus 50p and the Diplodocus 50p.
