History and design
The Mary Poppins 50p is a 2025 collector coin for P. L. Travers' nanny, who in the Royal Mint's words "first blew in on an east wind" to Number Seventeen, Cherry Tree Lane more than 90 years ago. The Mint says it is the first time the character has appeared on a UK coin. Its subject is the Mary Poppins of the eight-book series and its illustrations, and the Mint's pages note that the illustrations are licensed by HarperCollins.
It was not issued for circulation. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list only the Atlantic Salmon 50p for 2025, and the Mint sold this design as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin with colour, silver and gold versions. Coin Hunter gives the release date as 25 February 2025. The Mint has published no figure for the number of standard coins sold.
The reverse is credited to Emma Noble, a product designer at the Royal Mint. She remastered an original illustration by Mary Shepard, who drew the pictures for the books. It shows Mary Poppins making her way on the east wind with her umbrella and carpet bag in hand, heading for the Banks children. The proclamation describes it as "a depiction of the character Mary Poppins with an umbrella and carpet bag accompanied by the inscription MARY POPPINS".
The denomination is on the obverse, which carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The standard coin was sold sealed in a Royal Mint pack, so a typical example is uncirculated. A loose coin should be checked for handling marks, since a spent one no longer has that finish.
Two editions have the illustration printed in colour. The colour Brilliant Uncirculated coin was sold only by the Royal Mint, with a stated maximum of 10,000, and the silver proof is also colour printed, with a maximum of 5,010. A gold proof completes the range. All share the design described here.
Emma Noble's name is familiar to 50p collectors from the Beatrix Potter coins of 2016 to 2020, which the Royal Mint's design list also credits to her.
