History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Death Star II. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Death Star II 50p completed the Royal Mint's Star Wars vehicles set of 2024. The set began in March with the Millennium Falcon and also includes the TIE Fighter and the X-Wing, and the Mint describes this coin as the fourth and final release. All four designs were authorised by one royal proclamation, which came into force on 22 February 2024. Coin Hunter records the Death Star II going on sale on 12 July 2024.
The Mint's sales text calls the station the crown jewel of the Galactic Empire and one of the best known space stations in the films. The vehicles set followed the Mint's first Star Wars coins, the character pairings of 2023.
This is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and no sales figures for 2024 coins have been published.
The reverse shows the Death Star II with the inscription STAR WARS. The Royal Mint says the station is depicted in film-accurate detail, with artwork based on imagery from Lucasfilm's official library, and credits the design to Lucasfilm Ltd. The coin is a licensed product made with Disney and Lucasfilm.
A lenticular feature on the reverse changes as the coin is tilted, showing the insignia of the Galactic Empire and then the outline of the station. The Mint says the feature is on every edition except the quarter-ounce gold proof.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with his titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
