History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Queen's 80th Birthday. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Elizabeth II was born in London on 21 April 1926, and her 80th birthday in 2006 was marked with a £5 crown. The royal proclamation, given at Buckingham Palace on 12 October 2005, ordered coins in gold, silver and cupro-nickel. A separate proclamation added a platinum coin and a silver piedfort.
The Royal Mint publishes two figures for the base-metal coin. Its 2006 sales page lists 330,790 Brilliant Uncirculated coins sold. Its table of crowns struck to circulating standard gives 52,267 for 2006, a steep fall from the 1,075,516 of 2005 and the 1,205,594 of 2004. The Mint adds that from 2008 crowns ceased to be struck to a circulating standard at all.
It was the second crown for one of the Queen's own birthdays. The Royal Mint's list shows an earlier one for her 70th birthday in 1996, with a view of Windsor Castle.
Danuta Solowiej-Wedderburn designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as three trumpets with trumpet banners, accompanied by the inscription 1926 VIVAT REGINA 2006. The Latin means long live the Queen, and the two years are those of her birth and her 80th birthday. No other date appears on the coin.
The obverse has Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen with ELIZABETH II D G REG F D and the denomination FIVE POUNDS.
The cupro-nickel coin has a grained (milled) edge. The gold and silver coins have a plain edge with the incuse inscription DUTY SERVICE FAITH.
