History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Prince Philip. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Royal Mint issued this £5 crown in 2021 as a memorial coin made to celebrate the life and legacy of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Mint describes him as the longest serving consort in British history. With the coin it made a donation to The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and its international foundation.
The coin was authorised by a royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 23 June 2021, covering versions from the cupro-nickel crown up to a five thousand pound gold coin. It was the third £5 crown for the Duke in ten years, after the Mark Richards portrait for his 90th birthday in 2011 and the 2017 coin celebrating his life of service.
The Royal Mint's 2021 sales page lists 21,314 Brilliant Uncirculated coins, 2,092 coin and stamp sets and 20,449 coins in trade packaging, 43,855 in all. Among the 2021 crowns on that page only the Queen's 95th Birthday coin sold more, and the total is more than twice the 18,730 sold of the 2011 birthday crown.
The reverse portrait is by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, who also created the fourth definitive coinage portrait of Elizabeth II used from 1998. The Royal Mint says the portrait was approved by Prince Philip himself in 2008. The proclamation gives the inscription HRH THE PRINCE PHILIP DUKE OF EDINBURGH with the dates 1921 and 2021.
The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait of the Queen with ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 5 POUNDS 2021, so the coin pairs portraits of the couple by two of her coinage artists. The edge is milled.
