History and design
The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts crowns put each of the ten heraldic beasts from the 1953 coronation on a £5 coin. The beasts were statues sculpted by James Woodford RA that stood guard outside Westminster Abbey for the ceremony, which the Royal Mint describes as ancient symbols of ancestry and power.
The Griffin of Edward III, dated 2021, was the tenth coin in the series by the Royal Mint's own count, and the last of the individual beasts. It was followed by a completer coin uniting all ten. The cupro-nickel coin was set out in a royal proclamation given at Windsor Castle on 11 November 2020.
Crowns are no longer struck for circulation, and this one was sold as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin in fold-out packaging. The Royal Mint's 2021 sales page lists 11,995 coins and 7,000 in trade packaging, 18,995 in all, a little ahead of the 17,184 sold of the White Greyhound of Richmond coin issued the same year.
The Royal Mint says the griffin was closely associated with Edward III. The proclamation describes the reverse as a griffin with the heraldic badge of the Royal House of Windsor, the inscription GRIFFIN OF EDWARD III and the date.
Jody Clark designed both sides. He reimagined every beast in the series, and the obverse carries his fifth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF 5 POUNDS. The edge is milled.
Collecting notes
The Brilliant Uncirculated coin came in a bright fold-out card explaining the griffin's history. Check the field around the beast, where handling marks show first.
The Griffin was not sold as a £5 silver or gold proof. In precious metal it came as ounce-weight proofs, such as the one-ounce silver proof (4,396 sold) or the quarter-ounce gold proof (1,240 sold), which carry different denominations. A two-ounce fine silver £5 with the same subject was also authorised.
It pairs with the White Greyhound of Richmond, and the series closed with the Queen's Beasts completer.
