History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Millennium. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Millennium crown marks the turn from 1999 to 2000. A royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 17 November 1998 ordered £5 coins in gold, silver and cupro-nickel "to commemorate the Millennium". It appeared in the London Gazette of 30 November 1998 beside the proclamation for the Diana memorial crown.
The coin was issued through banks and post offices. The Royal Mint's 1999-2000 annual report says demand was strong, "particularly as the new millennium drew closer", and that issues of this and the Diana crown together reached about five million by March 2000. Its 2000-01 report records a second issue in 2000 "in continuation of the 1999-2000 dual-dated Millennium design". The Mint publishes no figure for this design alone: its striking totals of 5,396,300 for 1999 and 3,147,092 for 2000 each cover two designs.
Jeffrey Matthews designed the reverse. The proclamation describes the dial of a clock with the hour and minute hands set at 12 o'clock, incorporating a map of the British Isles, with the dates 1999 and 2000, the words ANNO DOMINI and the value FIVE POUNDS. The Mint's annual report calls it a symbolic clock face with the hands at twelve between the two dates.
The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen with the date of the year, so the same reverse appears on coins dated 1999 and 2000. The edge is plain with the incuse words WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE; the gold and silver versions have the words in raised letters.
